Founded in 1901, an all girls liberal arts college in Virginia is closing its doors at the end of this academic year. Sweet Briar College says its due to “insurmountable financial challenges.”
The announcement came on Tuesday. The college is located on more than 3,000 acres in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The school has a successful equestrian program. As a part of students’ studies they can obtain an Equine Studies Certificate for training or management among various other degrees. The college has over 300 employees.
President James Jones said in a statement the decision was made due to a lack of solutions for two problems. A decline in the number of students who choose to attend a small, rural, private liberal arts college and the college’s inability to sustain the college’s discounted tuition rate to attract students.
The last students will graduate from the college on May 16th. The doors are scheduled to close on August 25th after the summer session ends.
June 22, 2015 – A judge approved an agreement between those on opposite sides of the issue that will allow the college to stay open for another year.
