The attorney for Maria Borell’s dad appeared in court and entered a not guilty plea Monday on his client’s behalf.
Charles “Chuck” Borell, of Syracuse, N.Y., is charged with 43 counts of second-degree animal cruelty. The charges stem from dozens of horses being abandoned at a farm leased by the Borells.
Borell, who remains free on bond, did not appear in the Mercer County District courtroom for the hearing.
Borell’s daughter, racing trainer Maria Borell, faces the same charges. An arrest warrant has been issued, but not served by authorities, since she is reportedly out of state.
Kentucky authorities began investigating allegations of animal abuse after 43 horses were left by the Borells at a Mercer County property in a neglected state. The horses are being cared for by multiple organizations and their health is improving slowly.
Borell’s pre-trial hearing is scheduled for September 8.
