Maricopa County, Arizona
October 24, 2018
Arizona’s state veterinarian confirms Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM) in a yearling. EHM is the neurologic form of EHV-1.
The Maricopa County filly exhibited neurological signs leading to a state-ordered quarantine. Additionally, another yearling on the property traveled to an event 3-weeks prior. It is showing neurologic signs although the horse tested negative for the equine herpesvirus (EHV). The state notified the event organizer in order to offer recommendations to the participants, including biosecurity measures.
EIA Confirmed in Alberta Horse
October 9, 2018
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) confirms an Alberta horse is positive with Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA).
Therefore, a CFIA investigation is underway. The agency quarantined the index premises located in Bonnyville and that includes all horses on the property. The quarantine remains in effect until all disease response activities are complete, which includes the follow-up blood tests.
Additionally, veterinarians must euthanize any horses that are positive upon blood retests.
