Emily Champion, DVM
Funeral arrangements have been scheduled for the Louisiana equine veterinarian gunned down, along with her parents, in their Kentucky home on Sunday.
Visitation and funeral services are being held for Emily Champion, DVM and her parents, Boyd Lindsey Champion and Joy Champion, this weekend at the Trigg County High School Gymnasium. Arrangements are being handled by Goodwin Funeral Home in Cadiz.
A motive remains unclear. Authorities are only saying the three died of gunshot wounds.
The Champions’ son was uninjured in the shooting.
A fourth person found dead at the scene was identified as Vito Riservato. While the investigation continues, authorities say he is the suspected gunman. His relationship with the family remains unclear.
Dr. Champion practiced equine veterinary medicine. She worked at Baronne Veterinary Clinic, located in Sunset, Louisiana. The equine medical and surgical facility offers services to local farms, training centers, and racetracks.
She recently accepted a new position at a neighboring veterinary clinic.
Cathy Davis posted a moving tribute to her friend’s Facebook page.
The last time that I heard from you was Sunday morning. Although sore, you were still elated from your Saturday run, being home with your family, and finding Designing Women reruns on TV. On Saturday, you texted me “2:26! Woo Hoo! I didn’t die!”. Who could have ever imagined that, in just 24 hours, your elation would turn to terror?
I’m sorry that I encouraged you to quit your job. Thank you for encouraging me to quit mine. I am sorry that you will never get to come and run in the mountains, as we had planned. Sunrises and sunsets are different when you live in the clouds. But, I’m sure you know that now…
A memorial scholarship fund has been established to remember Dr. Champion. The goal is to raise $25,000 to continue Dr. Champion’s gift of giving. The legacy scholarship will help a budding veterinarian student each year.
