Florida Police Horse Painting Protégé

Painting Jacob

A crime fighter by night, Jacob turns heads everywhere he goes as he patrols Florida’s streets. When he and his partner aren’t keeping St. Petersburg residents safe, the police horse is cultivating his skills as a painter.

The dark bay horse’s human partner, Officer Jason Hughes says he noticed Jacob liked to grab things with his mouth so he had an idea. “I bet if I gave him a paintbrush, and put a canvas in front of it, he’d paint on it.” And he was right.

A homemade horse-proof easel holds the canvas that Jacob covers with brush strokes. Officer Hughes says painting helps keep Jacob challenged. It also helps him develop a deeper bond with his six-year-old equine partner.

Requests are already coming in to purchase Jacob’s artwork. The police department says his paintings will be available in the future and the proceeds will go to charity.
