A Selle Francais gelding collapsed between fences at the Spring Bay Horse Trials in Lexington, Kentucky on Sunday. The event reports National du Pas died while competing on the Training cross-country course.
Horse show officials say the horse’s death was not related to a fence on course. The 15-year-old gelding was ridden by Blake Park, who was not injured when the horse went down between fences 11 and 12.
A necropsy is being performed at the Kentucky Diagnostic Lab, which will be utilized to help further the USEA Equine Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Research Study. The study looks at how efficiently a horse’s cardiovascular and pulmonary systems function when horses gallop and jump cross country and if the short format increases pressure in the lung vessels and heart.
National du Pas was owned by Elizabeth Stewart.
