Update: A February jury trial ended in the conviction of purported horse rescuer Cassy Newell-Reed for misdemeanor animal cruelty.

Court Orders Horses Returned to New Beginnings Horse Rescue

A Virginia judge ordered Thursday that 42 horses seized from New Beginnings Horse Rescue must be returned. The purported rescue’s owner, Cassy Newell-Reed, is awaiting trial for animal cruelty.

King William County Animal Control has 48 hours to return the horses. Reportedly, 19 horses are back with Reed.

Six Peaceable Farm horses were included in the seizure from Reed’s property on June 8. Although New Beginnings Horse Rescue is not a 501(c)3 charity, Orange County placed 11 Peaceable Farm horses with Reed. It is unclear where the other five horses are and we are awaiting additional information.

Complaints regarding the horses’ conditions at New Beginnings began in December 2015, according to county records.

Reed is charged with three misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty. If convicted she faces up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine.

Reed is scheduled to stand trial on August 4.
