Help Find Missing Event Horse Ozzie
Thirty horses at an Iowa boarding stable escaped a massive barn fire Friday night.
Officials received reports regarding the fire that started around 5:40 p.m. at Maffitt Lake Equestrian Center near Cumming. When fire crews arrived the barn was collapsing. One horse perished in the fire.
People from the farm were saving horses from the burning stable when firefighters arrived. Horses became panicked and got loose. The horses were caught except for one and he still hasn’t been located.
Volunteers are searching for the gelding named Ozzie. Marinovich Eventing is asking those in the Des Moines area to keep an eye out for the bay Thoroughbred with a thin blaze and snip. The horse was last seen wearing a navy Rambo blanket and four white bandages on his legs. If you locate Ozzie, please contact 612-382-0094.
A horse injured during the ordeal is being treated at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine.
West Des Moines Fire Marshal Mike Whitsell said the 8,000 square foot stable is a total loss, but the cause of the fire isn’t known.
